**Altar Society participates in Relay for Life at Newton

NEWTON -- The St. Mary Altar Society participated in the annual Harvey County Relay for Life June 23-24 at the Newton High School track.
More than 25 teams participated in the event to raise money for the American Cancer Society in the community and to raise awareness of cancer.
At dark, a luminary celebration took place to pay tribute to those lost to cancer and to honor those still fighting. Luminaries were placed around the track symbolizing the hope and perseverance with which cancer patients continue to fight.
Because cancer does not stop at nighttime, Relay for Life starts at dusk and ends the next morning. The light and darkness of the day and night parallel the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while undergoing treatment.
The money raised at Relay for Life will support patient services, lifesaving research, education, and advocacy efforts, which is why it is called “relay”.
7/14 **Participating in the relay were front row, from left, Leslie Turk, Molly Taiclet, Pauline Casey, and Sue Schmidt; behind them are Jan Hill and Patsy Dilts.

**Father VanHaverbeke to talk about St. Peregine Ministry on July 25

Father Ken VanHaverbeke will talk about Saint Peregrine and how to begin a Saint Peregrine Ministry in your parish at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Center, 145 S. Millwood.
The Saint Peregrine Ministry is a ministry of compassion and healing. It does so through:
-- Being supportively present to people enabling them to walk with faith and confidence while they face the issue of cancer or any other life-threatening disease;
-- It is an invitation to live life more fully in the spirit of St. Peregrine;
-- It seeks to provide sacramental and prayerful support to people who are living with cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer’s or any other life-threatening condition;
-- It is also a source of support for those who are their care-givers;
-- The Ministry would gather monthly to pray and discuss how and who to serve in their time of need.

**About the saint

St. Peregrine was born in Forli, Italy, in the late 1200s. He joined the Servants of Mary in Siena, Italy. While serving the poor a sore on one of his legs was diagnosed as cancerous.
The night before his leg was to be amputated, Peregrine prayed before the image of the Crucified Christ.
In a dream, Peregrine saw Christ come off the cross and touch his leg. When he awoke, the wound was healed and the leg was saved. He lived another twenty years, dying on May 1, 1345 at the age of 80.
Peregrine was canonized on Dec. 27, 1726, and has been named the Patron Saint of those suffering from cancer and other life threatening diseases.
